🚀Revolutionizing LGS Portal Sheds with Innovative Software🚀

Some time ago, I, along with two colleagues, developed a groundbreaking piece of software designed to automate the engineering and detailing of LGS Portal Sheds using solid C sections. This innovative tool, despite its impressive capabilities, initially faced a challenge due to the use of rather deep C sections, approximately 200mm deep. You can find more details about this project and watch a video of it in action here.

To market this software, we engaged with several shed and LGS manufacturers, and the response has been quite promising. As part of our marketing efforts, we collaborated with an industrial / farm shed manufacturer to create a 6.5m wide, 4.2m to eaves shed using our solid C section design. This design featured:

- Portal Column: 178 x 102 x 19 UB (S355)
- Portal Rafter: 178 x 102 x 19 UB (S355

The shed, located in Preston, North of the UK, measured 6.5m in width, 4.2m to the eaves, and 15m in length, with three 5m bays.

Cost Analysis and Savings

Based on our calculations, the building required 95m of steel at 19kg/m, with a cost of £1300 per tonne, resulting in an estimated HR shed frame cost of £2340.

For the LGS option using C sections and plates, the total metal cost, including fabrication of plates for apex and eaves, was £1400, with a weight of 14.8kg/m².

We have now developed a lattice LGS solution, using 250mm deep columns and rafters and 100 x 50 x 1.6 C sections. This option resulted in a frame weight of 410kg, costing £720.

Significant Savings

The lattice LGS solution offered substantial savings, reducing the frame cost by over £1,600 compared to traditional methods. The weight of the structure also saw a significant reduction, from 19kg/m² to just 4.2kg/m² for the lattice option, and 14.8kg/m² for the solid C section option.

This innovative approach not only demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of our software but also highlights the potential for significant material savings and efficiency improvements in shed construction.
